Create a Banner Configuration

This guide will teach marketplace dashboard users how to create banner ad configurations. We will first cover the steps for creating a homepage configuration. Then we will explain the special steps needed for category and search page configurations. Here’s a quick summary of the steps.

Getting started

First click on “Set a configuration” (or “Add a configuration” if you’ve previously created a few configurations).

Then select “Homepage,” “Categories,” or “Search” to define a placement setting for your configuration.

The next steps differ depending on which placement you selected. Read on to learn how to finalize configurations for each different placement type.

Homepage configuration steps

If you chose to create a homepage configuration, you need only need to fill out these settings:

  • Set Dimension: choose your primary device and set your creative’s aspect ratio
  • Advanced Settings (optional): set your creative approval method and specify vendor access

Choose a primary device

First choose one primary device. Your primary device is the device your marketplace uses more frequently. Here are some use cases:

  • If you’re a delivery app business like Grubhub or Uber Eats, your primary device would be mobile. Choose mobile.
  • If you’re a retailer like Walmart or Homegoods, you might be using your desktop website more than your mobile platform to meet customers. Choose desktop.

Set your creative’s aspect ratio

After you’ve set either the mobile or desktop device as primary device, you must specify an aspect ratio for your creative. You can either choose from 3 aspect ratio presets for each respective device or specify a custom size.

Presets

These are the most commonly used aspect ratios for each device in the retail industry. We provide you with a preview window and an explanation to help you choose as well.

Custom

If you select a “custom” dimension, upload your image sample with the “Upload a creative” button or by drag-and-dropping your image into the preview window. Topsort will immediately measure and record the dimensions for you. You can also “add a dimension manually.”

Set a secondary dimension (optional)

Set a secondary dimension if you want this configuration’s settings to apply to campaigns created for both your mobile and desktop platforms. All settings (placement, aspect ratio, advanced settings) will apply to campaigns created for both your primary and secondary device.

To do so, press the “+ Add a secondary dimension” to create one and follow the same steps we described above.

Should I choose mobile or desktop for my primary and secondary dimensions?

Let’s say you use both desktop and mobile platforms, but use desktop more or want to focus on creating campaigns for desktop. Choose desktop for your primary and mobile for your secondary dimension, and vice versa.

Create as many configurations as you want with each dimension: custom, half page, medium, or leaderboard.

Advanced settings (optional)

The advanced settings give you control over 2 settings as of now. You can choose to approve banner ad creatives before campaigns go live. And you can grant specific vendors access to creating banner ad campaigns using this particular configuration.

Toggle the “Advanced settings” button and you’ll see the 2 options: “Auto-approve creatives” and “Limit access by vendor”

Banner Ad Approval Options

  • Auto-approvals: Turning ON “auto-approve creatives” ensures that all creatives are automatically approved without a marketplace representative’s review.
  • Manual approvals (default): Turning OFF “auto approve creatives” lets you manually approve creatives on our “Ad Reviews” page before the campaign goes live. Learn how to approve creatives within Topsort here.

Vendor Access to Creating Banner Ad Campaigns

  • Limited vendor access: When “Limit access by vendor” is turned ON, you can specify which vendors can launch campaigns with this configuration. Select the vendors you wish to include by searching them in the search bar. Once added, vendors will show up underneath the search bar. Add or delete as many vendors as you want.
  • Unlimited vendor access (default): When “Limit access by vendor” is turned OFF, all vendors can participate in creating and running banner ad campaigns.

Press “save” to save your dimensions, approval method, and vendor access settings.

You can come back to edit these settings later.

Category page configuration steps

Creating a category page configuration requires one additional step: picking the relevant category pages the ad will aim to appear on.

Picking Category(s)

Select at least one category. These categories will appear as options to select from when you create a banner ad campaign with category targeting.

To save time, use the search bar or the “select all categories” toggle on the bottom left of the page.

Search page configuration steps

Creating a search page configuration requires one additional step: setting the keywords for the search pages that the banner ad will aim to appear on.

Setting Keywords

Set your keywords by uploading a text file. When a user goes to create a banner ad campaign with keyword targeting, these keywords will appear as options to select from.

Upload a CSV file with your keyboards. The words must separated by commas between them. We support CSV files with a limit of 1MB.

Once uploaded, the keywords will appear on screen and you can add or disable certain keywords before moving on to the next step.
